Free guide · Web and business technology

Build the right tool for the job.

Before purchasing a domain or commissioning software, decide what people need to accomplish. Your goals—not the newest trend—should determine the technology and budget.

Choose the deliverable

Website, application or installable web app?

Website

Best for explaining your business, showcasing services, publishing information and inviting inquiries or reservations.

Web application

Appropriate when people must sign in, update records, complete workflows or use interactive features beyond reading content.

PWA

A progressive web app may offer an app-like browser experience and installability in compatible environments; device behavior varies.

Landing page

A focused page designed around one campaign, offer or customer action with measurable follow-through.

Own the essentials

Understand domains, hosting and handoff.

A domain name is not the same as website hosting. Make sure you know who the legal registrant is, where DNS is managed, what a first-year fee includes and what renewal or transfer will cost.

For a commissioned website, ask which deliverables you own, what can be exported, where content will be hosted, who controls the domain and which maintenance services are optional. A lower initial build fee can be offset by unexpected operating expenses.

Create a brief

Six questions before development starts.

Audience

Who uses it, and on what devices?

Outcome

What action or problem must it solve?

Content

What brand, text, images and data are authorized?

Connections

Which existing business systems require access?

Also establish a target budget and launch window. Name the person who will approve design, legal statements, costs and the final deliverable.

Launch responsibly

Test the experience, not just the code.

Review mobile navigation, readable typography, contrast, forms, privacy notices, error messages, performance, HTTPS, backup and basic accessibility. Test actual payment, login or automation features independently when they are in scope.

Keep recurring provider costs separate from the agreed initial development fee, and require evidence of deployment and a handoff path. Do not launch live domain purchases or customer charges without tested payment and fulfillment flows.

Build with AI

AI support is useful when scope remains clear.

AI-assisted development can accelerate drafts, design exploration, coding and review. The final project still needs specialist validation, functional testing, permission checks and acceptance before release.
